How it works

Step Your Story Up! is a free, monthly writing workshop led by David Meltzer.

All writing shared on the registration form will be organized into a Reading Materials Packet which attendees will receive in advance of our workshop. Author names will be removed so we can focus on the writing. Submitting writing in advance is not required to attend the workshop.

At the workshop, we'll meditate, read aloud all the writing in the packet, and share our feedback. I'll walk us through the writing, offer advice I would give as if the author were my client, and encourage participation from our entire group. The purpose of this workshop is to improve our writing by using professional practices I'll share to develop, structure, and clarify our stories.

Preparing for the workshop

While it would be great to read as much of the Reading Materials Packet as possible, it's far more important to be present and engage with each other's work compassionately.

Our priority isn’t publishing – it’s preserving human dignity.
